This is a common question I get.

I would NEVER suggest taking that route.

Here is why:

- Your marks won’t change.

- You won’t suddenly get a referral.

- Your CV won’t see significant improvements.

CA Final Classes

The chances of getting into a firm will likely remain the same as they are now. There is nothing additional you can do in the interim that will significantly alter your situation.

Deferring only means you are postponing the opportunity to earn what you could have earned as a CA by another six months. I am sure you would not want that.

Under no circumstances should you EVER defer your attempt just to test your luck in the next cycle. Moreover, the competition will be tougher with three attempts instead of two.

Select the best option available to you, create a timeline, and start your articleship if you have not already.

1. Ensuring that suggested answers are provided promptly. Currently, they often arrive after the revaluation window gets closed. It would be better to release them immediately after the exams, allowing for a window for comments. This would enhance transparency.

2. If the institute starts providing marking schemes, it would eliminate many discussions and enable students to engage in more constructive feedback and work harder for their exams.

3. Including a 50-70% MCQ portion would greatly enhance candidates' subjective understanding and analytical skills, particularly through challenging case studies at a level expected from CA students. Trust me, there is not a better way than subjective questions to properly examine a candidate.

4. The communication system with students should be drastically improved. We have witnessed cases where students struggle to get replies for even small queries, leading to weeks of confusion due to lack of clarity.

5. Aligning the result day and time with fixed exam days (similar to ACCA) would provide consistency and clarity to students.

Also, students, it is important not to have high expectations from ICAI but rather from oneself. ICAI operates in its own style.

While new reforms are being introduced, there are still areas for improvement. We can only stay optimistic about when these changes will be implemented. We can never be sure when they will happen.

In my opinion, the primary intent behind the current updates is to ensure that students can progress through their levels relatively quickly and commence their professional journey with minimal delay in case of a failure.

Additionally, these changes may motivate more students to join the course, helping achieve the goal of 30 lakh chartered accountants.

Regarding concerns about reduced packages for chartered accountants due to increased supply, I believe the number of students who eventually pass will remain constant.

And for those who are asking: the value of the course is not decreasing. It is worth emphasising that the value lies in the person undertaking the course rather than the course itself.

In conclusion, while the increased frequency of exams is a positive step, the institute should prioritise prompt provision of suggested answers and introduce marking schemes to enhance transparency and feedback.

Every teacher whom you think is living a glamorous life is also working damn hard to this day.

There have been days when I have even slept in the studio. I am not boasting but just letting you nothing comes easy.

It is not just about studying for today, it is about preparing yourself for the future.

Initially, we tend to think, Fod dunga, faad dunga. Duniya ko dikha dunga.'

But as time passes, we become complacent, and on the exam day, we say, 'Agar thoda time aur hota, fir dikhata tera bhai'.

I believe that in the initial phases, it is crucial to set a timeline.

Take a paper, write your timelines down.

👉🏻 This way, you will always be able to review your goals and take action as needed. For example, you want to finish FM, SM, and Audit by 15th February.

👉🏻 When you write it down, it will stick in your mind. Because of this, you will always be dedicated to ensuring that by this date, you complete most of your tasks.

⚠️ But yes, it is NOT a Lakshman Rekha. Sometimes, it could be exceeded. It is all fine. (But it does not mean we won't be serious about it. Just saying, do not take it as an end in itself because yes, life can happen too).

Some of you may have given papers previously, do one thing.

👉🏻 Also, write down what did not work. What are you doing? (Chats with someone, Snapchat filters, Instagram reels, Twitter hashtags, etc.)

Now that you know your mistakes and have a timeline set, what should you do?

👉🏻 Normal Action (not super-duper action) + Consistency You do not need to study 14 hours a day, 4 days a week. You need to study 8 hours a day throughout the week consistently. (Live classes can play a huge role in helping you out with consistency).

Again, it is not about studying intensively for a few days, it is about consistently putting in the effort.

Honestly, the papers in May 2023 and November 2023 have not been very challenging. If you say, 'Sir, mushkil tha,' maybe there was difficulty in preparation.

In May 2023, among the students who shared their results with me, 9 students scored 80+, and 50+ students scored more than 70. Students who scored 60+, the number was really high, but I can't recall the exact number. Yes, I'm talking about Auditing. You read the numbers right!

So, definitely it is not about the paper difficulty.

• Avoid distractions.

• Create a study-conducive environment.

• Keep your mobile 📲 on DND.

• Find silent hours 🤫 according to your personal conditions. Some might find silence at their place early morning, or some will find it in the daytime or extreme night hours. Online classes give you the freedom to adjust your studies according to variables that are not in your control.

• Always have a bottle of water with you and keep sipping; it will surely keep you attentive and hydrated. You can also have black coffee in the initial sessions of the day, and green tea without caffeine in the session after half day is passed. 

• Plan your classes properly. 🚨

  • For instance, if you are covering CA Inter Audit Classes, they total 120 hours. Add a 10 to 15% buffer, let's say 15 hours. So the total hours equals 135 hours.

  • Now decide your study strategy.

  • Consider whether you will be tackling one subject a day or two or three subjects a day.

  • For example, if you are going for only one subject a day and you are planning to study 8 to 10 hours a day, the above subject can be completed in 15 to 17 days easily.

  • Now, let's say you are planning to study two subjects every day and I am assuming you will be dedicating approximately 5 hours daily to audit, then you can complete it in 27 to 30 days.

• 🙋🏻 Engage

  During the classes, try to engage as much as possible with your teacher. I know most of you watch recordings of classes, but you can still try to answer the questions that are being asked by the teacher as if you are attending a live class.

• ✍🏻 Marking

  Mark important and tricky points/questions while going through the classes. Our goal should be to watch the classes only once and then always revise from our own notes and markings. This will save a lot of time.

• 🔖 Short notes

  Make short notes according to the style you followed earlier in your other exams. You can have a dedicated notebook for the same or you can simply note it down on the printed material given by the faculty, or paste blank pages or slips in between and make notes on them. Be yourself, follow what suits you best, don’t copy.

• 📝 Do questions

  Questions help in cementing the concepts learned. During and after class, try to answer as many questions as possible on the topics covered in the class. It will help you understand the requirements of the ICAI for a particular topic.

• 👩🏻‍💻 Revision of classes

  Revise after every class, make short notes, create voice notes, read, and act as if you are teaching the topic to someone else. Take help from already uploaded revision videos and marathons. Revise the last class before the next one for sure.

• 🧑🏻‍🏫 Clear your doubts

  Ask your teachers questions and get them resolved within the classes themselves. Do not let them remain pending for long.

• 🔍 Ask the community

  Become a part of genuine CA Student communities. You can get help from there as well. Ask questions, solve queries, and engage in healthy discussions.

• 🖌 Chapter-wise mocks

  Give chapter-wise mock tests after the completion of every chapter. Let it be a self-evaluated one. Give a question bank to your friends and family and let them choose random questions for you to answer then and there.

• 📝 Proper log and review

  You must keep a proper log of classes, noting how much is done, how much is left, and by when you will be able to complete your classes.

• ❌ Don't over-discuss or fight

  It generally happens when you and your friends have taken classes from different faculties. It is of no use. Just keep calm and follow the ICAI for the exam. 😀

First things first, we are all unique. Our circumstances, the way we study and learn, the time available for preparation, and our likes & dislikes in terms of subjects all differ.

Nov 2023 Classes at heavy discounts

Keeping the above in mind, here are brief guidelines for different cases of CA students, applicable for both CA Inter and CA Final students. Note that this decision should be taken as soon as possible. You need clarity on this.

📍Case 1: Appeared One Group in May 23, result negative, no exemption, preparation of another group not started yet - Give the same group that you had in May 23.

📍Case 2: Appeared One Group in May 23, result negative, no exemption, preparation of another group is underway but done below 30% approx overall - Give the same group that you had in May 23.

📍Case 3: Appeared One Group in May 23, result negative, exemption in 1 or more subjects, preparation of another group is underway irrespective of the percentage of completion - Give both groups in November 23.

CA Inter Audit Fast Track for Nov 23

📍Case 4: Appeared One Group in May 23, result negative, no exemption, preparation of another group is underway and done above 30% approx overall. This is the most complicated case.

• You have to make a timeline for yourself and see if you can cover both groups with at least 2 revisions and a mock test in the remaining time till the start of exams. If yes, go for both, otherwise go for only one group.

• If you decide to go for one group, which one should it be? I suggest the group you started preparing for after May 23 exams. Remember to be realistic when making a timeline and decision for a single or both groups. Don't get influenced by others - you are unique.

• Don't plan to do one group plus one subject from another group; it's better to give one group and score high marks in all subjects of that group.

📍Case 5: Appeared for both groups in May 23, result negative, no exemptions. If your marks are above 360, go for both groups with better preparation. If your marks are below 300, prepare for one group. For those with scores between 300 to 360, you need to assess and decide.

📍Case 6: Appeared for both groups in May 23, result negative, exemption in one or more subjects - Go for both groups for sure.

The CA course provides an incredible opportunity for anyone, particularly those from a lower-middle-class background, to transcend their circumstances and pursue their multi-generational dreams.🎯

However, beyond academic subjects, what does the CA course truly impart? It teaches you:

• Patience.

• Hard Work.

• Resilience in the face of failure.

The harsh reality is that life can be unfair and survival requires adaptability.

👀 A solutions-oriented approach, both professionally and personally.

✍🏻 An unquenchable thirst for learning and self-improvement.

However, these lessons will only resonate if you're eager to learn.

Here are a few things I want you to bear in mind as you pursue the CA course, or even after completing it:

• Don't take this lightly. Your first attempt is your golden chance, so give it your all. If you're lax about it, you'll have to pay a heavy price in terms of time and the stigma associated with failure. Don't get complacent due to the semi-annual examination system or think about postponing your attempt.

• It's often a solitary journey. You'll have to be self-reliant and manage your studies, family responsibilities, practical training, and more. Mentorship in this course is not direct, so if you have virtual mentors, extract maximum learning from them.

• To become a shining star in the CA fraternity, you need to focus on your communication skills, personality development, and technological acumen. I call this the "CPT of CA", so don't compromise on them.

• Gain meaningful articleship exposure. Don't fall for the myths surrounding it; strive for the best firm in your city, state, or country. Opt for specialization and dispel the notion that generalization is better for future practice - it's not. The better your articleship exposure, the better your growth.

• Improve your decision-making and analytical abilities. Those who are problem-solvers, self-motivated, and take initiative are in high demand.

• Stop expecting anything from ICAI. It has provided you with a launch pad and a 75-year legacy. Make the most out of it and start expecting from yourself.

• Respect your profession but at the same time, don't fall for exaggerated claims made by some 'guardians' of the profession. Accept the facts, work on your shortcomings, and this will serve you well.

• Your trajectory post-CA depends entirely on you. It can be a launchpad for a variety of career paths - you can be an auditor, chef, film director, CEO of some of the biggest organisations of India, entrepreneur, educator, and more.

• Don't hesitate to pursue further studies that will add value to your career. Explore options like an MBA, CFA, UPSC, and anything else that interests you.

Remember, your journey is unique and it's up to you to shape it the way you want it to be.

This is one of the most common messages I receive from CA, CS, CMA, and ACCA students (who obviously studied from their relevant materials).

If a student has genuinely put in the effort, in terms of the number of quality hours of classes and self-study, there are only a few reasons which could lead to unfavorable results.

The first question I pose to students when they ask me this question is about the number of mock tests they've attempted.

Typically, the answer is either zero or one.

This is akin to a cricket player going straight into a world cup match or final without practicing a single ball in a match-like environment.

Consider how many tests or exams you took before your class 10th or class 12th exams.

And what comes after Mock tests?

Proper feedback is the next step. Many students self-evaluate their mock tests, but there are numerous issues with this approach. In auditing terms, you lack independence. Your judgment is biased, and furthermore, you are not an expert.

Always get your mock tests evaluated by an impartial, expert third party so that you can receive constructive feedback and work on your specific weaknesses.

Keep in mind, not taking a mock test is essentially taking a chance with a high probability of not passing your exams. Similarly, a mock test without proper feedback is just as ineffective as not taking a test at all.

I remember advocating the advantages of mock tests to my students, and one of them countered that the results of mock tests demotivated them. This surprised me, as I had never considered this perspective.

For those who feel that taking mock tests could be demotivating, here's my response:

While a properly evaluated mock test might feel demotivating in the short run, it will undoubtedly boost your score in the actual exam.

1. It will help identify your weaknesses. Yes, confronting our weaknesses can be uncomfortable, but think about the satisfaction you'll feel once you overcome them.

2. It will help you to simulate the exact exam environment, mentally preparing you for your exams.

3. It will certainly assist you in completing your exams on time.

Remember, no one can give you a 100% guarantee that you will clear your CA/CS/CMA or ACCA Exams in one go. However, through mock tests, we can increase your chances of passing, or at the very least, reduce the risk of failure to an acceptably low level."

A word of caution for all students: The source of the mock test is as important as taking the mock test and the subsequent evaluation. Always opt for authentic mock test sources.

In the first instance, it's the responsibility of the teachers whose classes you have taken to provide you with properly evaluated mock tests. However, if this is not available, please be diligent in checking the credentials of the entity providing your mock tests. 

You definitely don't want to take low-quality mock tests or rely on less credible checking of your tests. The quality and authenticity of the mock tests and their evaluations are crucial in genuinely preparing you for your actual exams.
